As I watch and read the very sad news on TV and the Internet about the 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti I can’t help but think about all those people who had no idea it was even coming. One minute they were alive and the next minute they were dead. It’s such a tragic loss of life.

There are already speculative death tolls between 30,000 and 100’s of thousands of people.

It’s only a matter of time before we get a devastating earthquake of the same magnitude or higher here in the U.S. Sure we may have a little more advanced technology and be slightly better prepared but just how much preparation can one make when an earthquake of the type hits.

What if you’re at your home? What if your children are in school? What happens if it hits while you’re at the grocery store?

I don’t believe the structures here in the U.S. can handle a severe earthquake anymore than Haiti could withstand it. When an earthquake of that size does show it’s nasty face in the U.S it will yield just as much devastation if not more.

It might be a good idea to get a game plan together with your loved ones just in case we get the unfortunate pleasure of a 7.0 or higher anytime soon.

You can visit USGS , learn more and sign up for earthquake notifications anywhere in the world. You can also read what preparations you and your family can take before and during an earthquake at Fema’s website.
